The EcoBoost is a series of turbocharged, direct-injection gasoline engines produced by Ford Motor Company. The line ranges from three to six cylinders, and each configuration includes direct-injection, variable timing, and exhaust-driven power.
How does It Work?
The EcoBoost engine utilizes three technologies:
- Direct injection enables multiple injections per combustion cycle, improving the vehicle’s fuel economy. Direct injection results in improved fuel consumption and helps reduce emissions.
- Variable camshaft timing consists of electronically controlled hydraulic valves which ensure your engine always has enough air to deliver peak performance, and eliminate waste.
- Exhaust driven power is the process that converts exhaust gases into mechanical energy. Utilizing the excess exhaust gases by injecting these fumes as air into the EcoBoost engine during fuel consumption maximizes efficiency.
What kind of EcoBoost is in my Ford?
F-150
The twin-turbocharged 3.5L motor is the base engine for the F-150. A powerful combination of efficiency and power, the 3.5L, six-cylinder EcoBoost engine allows the F-150 to maintain optimized performance at all times.
The 2.7L V6 EcoBoost, another of the options available for the F-150, is capable of producing 325 horsepower and 375 lb./ft. of torque. It doesn’t matter if you use your F-150 for work, for the daily commute, or for recreational off-roading, there is a perfect truck to suit your needs.
Mustang
For the 2019 model year, Ford has made the EcoBoost the sole alternative to the V8. The 2019 Mustang EcoBoost is a respectable counterpart to the V6 or V8. An output of 310 horsepower and increased 350 lb./ft. of torque. The 2.3L engine allows the 2019 Mustang EcoBoost to go 0 to 97 km/h in less than five seconds.
The 2.3L I-4 EcoBoost engine is a greener alternative to the V8 that does not compromise on power or efficiency.
Hot Hatches
The Focus ST equipped with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine quickly gained its popularity in the autocross landscape as well as other performance driving circles. The turbocharged 2.0L EcoBoost engine found in the Focus ST has an output of 252 horsepower and 270 lb./ft. of torque delivering a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds.
The Ford Fiesta ST features a 1.6L EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine that puts out 197 horsepower and 202 ft./lb. of torque. The Fiesta ST packs a lot of power into a small package and combining it with the EcoBoost technology; delivers a unique driving experience.
Ford looked at the ST features and decided to take them up a notch. The result is the high-performance Focus RS equipped with the 2.3L EcoBoost engine. This vehicle has an output of 345 horsepower and 325 lb./ft. of torque making it a much-improved version of the ST with Ford’s AWD technology makes an incredible combination of driveability and power.
If you prefer the full capabilities of the EcoBoost engine, but at a more affordable price than a Mustang or an F-150, then a hot hatch is just right for you.
